Boing Boing: Blogging is good for your career

Boing Boing: Blogging is good for your career: "Blogging is good for your career
The perfect antidote to those fired-for-blogging posts: Tim Bray explains why blogging is good for your career:

1. You have to get noticed to get promoted.
2. You have to get noticed to get hired.
3. It really impresses people when you say 'Oh, I've written about that, just google for XXX and I'm on the top page' or 'Oh, just google my name.'
4. No matter how great you are, your career depends on communicating. The way to get better at anything, including communication, is by practicing. Blogging is good practice.
5. Bloggers are better-informed than non-bloggers. Knowing more is a career advantage.
6. Knowing more also means you're more likely to hear about interesting jobs coming open.
7. Networking is good for your career. Blogging is a good way to meet people.
8. If you're an engineer, blogging puts you in intimate contact with a worse-is-better 80/20 success story. Understanding this mode of technology adoption can only help you.
9. If you're in marketing, you'll need to understand how its rules are changing as a result of the current whirlwind, which nobody does, but bloggers are at least somewhat less baffled.
10. It's a lot harder to fire someone who has a public voice, because it will be noticed."

Hack A Day, how-to: ‘usb battery’ v2

ExtremeTech: Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch Widescreen LCD

Extreme Tech were quite impressed with the new 24" Dell Monitor, and I am too, I will try to convince my manager to get me at least the 20" version (CNet)

Review: Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch Widescreen LCD: "We were quite impressed with the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW. Its combination of relatively low price, good performance, and ergonomic features will appeal to many. While $1,199 may not seem cheap, it considerably undercuts the competition. That may result in some price drops on other large displays in the future."

Geek.com PDA/cellphone Review: i-mate JAM

Geek.com gave the Jam 5 geek heads, and I agree with them, Although I like the JAM, one of my friends has it and it is wonderful, but I am still waiting for MDA IV

Geek.com PDA/cellphone Review: i-mate JAM
Conclusion

The I-mate JAM is an incredible device, and I still have doubts about giving it up. I look forward to a version with more RAM and integrated Wi-Fi running Windows Mobile 2005 this fall. If size is a criterion for you and you are indecisive about a Smartphone or Pocket PC, this is definitely the device for you since it is so much more powerful than a Smartphone and is not limited in applications you can use. If I weren't such a thumb-keyboard fan then this would be my device (along with the RAM upgrade). The JAM is one HOT device right now, and I highly recommend you visit David's site first when looking to purchase a SIM-unlocked device not available here in the US

Ratings Defense

I give the I-mate JAM the full 5 Geekheads for Quality, since the device is very well built, the processor is quick, the display is very well saturated (I think that is the word for amazing colors) and bright, the battery life is amazing, and the form factor is the best you can find in a Phone Edition device.

For Geekness I award the JAM 4.5 Geekheads due to the fact that Carrier Devices and HTC fit a full Pocket PC into such a small form factor, along with the addition of a mobile phone. If there were more RAM and Wi-Fi then I would have given it 5 Geekheads.

This is the best compact Phone Edition device out there, and it was an easy decision to award the JAM a Geek.com Pick!"

Welcome to the Google Hacking Database (GHDB)!

"Welcome to the Google Hacking Database (GHDB)!"

I came a cross this site today, it contains some clever search strings that uses Google to get important information from unprotected networks, or "googleDorks" as he calls them.

How Google Maps work

How Google Maps work: "By now, many of you will have gone and tried out the new Google Maps
application. By and large, you have to admit that it's pretty damned
slick for a DHTML web application -- even my wife was impressed, and
that's not easy with geek toys. So, in the spirit of Google Suggest and
GMail, I've decided to have a quick peek under the hood to figure out
what makes it tick."

A very nice and knowledgable article about how Google Maps work under the hood, I have already ditched Mapquest and Yahoo Maps for Google, if you haven't yet just give it a try.

New Details on MDA IV (Brighthand)

This Update says it all.

The MDA IV will use a clamshell design with a screen on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other. In addition, its "twist and flip" screen will be able to rotate and then be closed down over the keyboard, allowing the device to be used in a tablet configuration.
YES!
It was already known that this device would use a 520 MHz processor, but MoDaCo is reporting that it will include 128 MB of RAM.
YES!
T-Mobile MDA IV The HTC Universal is widely expected to run Windows Mobile 2005 for Pocket PC, code-named Magneto.
YES!
T-Mobile confirmed that this device, in addition to its GSM/GPRS/UMTS capabilities, will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Supposedly, it will automatically switch between whichever wireless network is best at any given moment.
YES!
The HTC Universal will certainly have two cameras, one next to the screen for video conferencing, and one on the other side for images and video. Reportedly, the internal camera will be VGA, while the external one will be 1.3 megapixel.

This is the top item on my wishlist now, Just before the Everio
